This piece was inspired by an acquaintance’s dream of a melting, overwhelming crowd of hands reaching and climbing out. Right after they shared this vivid vision with me, I experimented with creating a gold-ground canvas to capture it. I used gold leaf pieces to bring out the natural roughness of the canvas and create new textures with material and light. To contrast this, graphite pencils were used to create realistic working hands in varying levels of contrast.
